A study has revealed that people with certain eye colors could have a higher chance of becoming dependent on alcohol.

Researches from the University of Vermont have reportedly found that people with lighter colored eyes had a greater rate of alcoholism than those with darker eyes.

started out with a database of 10,000 African Americans and European Americans and was then narrowed down to 1,263 people struggling with alcohol addiction.

In that sample, they found that those with eyes that were blue, green, grey, or with brown in the centre, may have a higher chance of becoming dependent on alcohol. They even controlled other factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and retested the analysis three times.

The results also showed a "statistically significant" interaction between the genes for eye color and alcohol dependence, suggesting one may influence the other.

The authors found that primarily European Americans with light-colored eyes – including green, grey and brown in the center – had a higher incidence of alcohol dependency than those with dark brown eyes, with the strongest tendency among blue-eyed individuals. The study outlines the genetic components that determine eye color and shows that they line up along the same chromosome as the genes related to excessive alcohol use.

"Right now it's a question for us—we don't know what drives this," says Dawei Li, the Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Dawei who co-led the experiment.

Li told The Huffington Post that the next step is to try and replicate the results and see if future studies have the same outcome. So, while the results are interesting, there's no need to check into AA based on your eye color just yet.
