Guzmania (Guzmania, more precise name - gusmania) belongs to the Bromelia family (Bromeliaceae) and is represented by about 130 species of evergreen herbaceous plants. The long leaves of the Guzmania are collected in an elegant rosette and can be either monochromatic or with a longitudinal or cross-striped pattern on the upper side of the leaf blade. Fans of houseplants appreciate Guzmania for the special beauty of bright bracts gathered in inflorescences of orange, yellow, red, burgundy flowers. The bracts are so beautiful that they completely compensate for their appearance with the rather nondescript flower of this tropical plant.

That is why the breeders brought about ten varieties of hybrids of gusmania, which care at home does not require specific knowledge and rich experience in growing exotic ornamental plants. Indoor guzmaniya rarely grows into a height of more than 40 cm and blooms for 2-3 months in a row in spring or summer, if you create suitable conditions (humid air, good illumination) indoors and ensure proper home care. If you already had the experience of growing room calathea, also of tropical origin, then it will be easier to understand the specifics of home care for guzmania. Photos of different types of this indoor plant, as well as useful tips and video materials for beginning flower growers, can be found in this article below. In phytodesign, guzmania is often used to decorate a small home greenhouse, a winter garden, or any other room suitable for growing thermophilic and moisture-loving plants. A bright flower looks gorgeous in composition with indoor plants such as spathiphyllum (Female happiness) or anthurium (Male happiness), flowering kalanchoe, decorative azalea, miniature pot rose, palm-like yucca.
One of the most popular species of this hybrid tropical plant is the reed Guzmania minor with shiny long leaves, elegant and bright bracts (see photo). Also magnificent decorative characteristics are such indoor species as Guzmania sanguinea with blood-red leaves during flowering, mosaic Guzmania musaica with brown and pale green stripes on the leaf blades, Guzmania Tempo with bright bracts and long leaves of light green color, at also the luxurious Guzmania Donnell-Smith, with erect peduncle and scaly elongated leaves. These ornamental species are interesting to look at against the background of such unpretentious tree-like plants as Ficus Benjamin, Dracaena Marginata, Hibiscus (Chinese Rose), Dollar Tree (Zamiokulkas) or Money Tree (Crassula).

Location and lighting.

The best option is to place a pot with a plant in the southeast, northeast or west side of the room on a stand. If you want to place a light-loving Guzmania on the south side, be sure to shade the window glass in the summer period with thin papyrus paper so that the leaves of the houseplant will not get burned from direct sunlight. In the autumn-winter period, it is desirable to place phyto-lamps next to the plant for additional lighting when the day begins to rapidly shorten.

Temperature mode.

During the rest period, homemade guzmania will feel comfortable at normal room temperature - 18-21 ° C. But during the growing season and especially - during flowering, it is desirable to keep the temperature in the range of 23-25 ° C. In this case, the bright bracts of a blooming guzman will delight your eyes for three months.

Air humidity.

This tropical plant loves a high level of humidity, but it will bloom and will not lose its decorative value even with moderate humidity if you regularly moisturize a moisture-loving plant. In spring and summer, it is advisable to spray the guzmania 2-3 times a day with warm, settled water. In winter, you can spray several times a week or every day if the heating system makes the air in the room dry.

For irrigation, use only separated warm water. It is important to consider that guzmaniya belongs to epiphytic plants. Its surface roots are quite tender and start quickly rot with stagnant moisture around the root system. In the autumn-winter period, water the plant very moderately, when the topsoil dries out completely. In spring and summer you can water an exotic plant once a day. Important ! Do not pour water directly into the soil. During irrigation, it is necessary to fill the central funnel formed by the sheet rosette, approximately two centimeters. In the heat try to fill this funnel so that the water is there constantly.

Mixing and feeding.

In flower shops you can find a special mixture for epiphytes, the title of which will include the phrase "for bromeliads". But you can make a suitable mixture for planting Guzman himself. Option 1: charcoal, fiber peat and river sand - all in equal parts. Option 2: sphagnum moss and dried shredded fern roots in a ratio of one to three.

Top dressing can be done once every two weeks during the growing season. Special fertilizer for bromeliad epiphytes should be diluted with warm soft water and poured into a sheet rosette.

Be sure to transplant the plant in a shallow pot with a suitable well-drained substrate after purchase. You can then transplant guzmania as it grows in spring once a year before the flowering period, after which the plant dies. Replant guzmaniya very carefully, because it has very delicate and vulnerable roots.

Breeding is an important stage in the process of home cultivation of the Guzman, since after the flowering period this indoor plant dies.

During the growth and development of room ghzmaniya, shoots should appear around the mother plant (another name is kids). It is necessary to carefully cut the process with a sharp knife and make sure that there are roots on it. After that, you can gently transplant the baby in a new pot with a suitable substrate. Guzman children take root very easily if the roots are not damaged and appropriate conditions are created for the normal development of the plant at home. Sometimes a young plant begins to bloom a year after transplanting into a separate pot.
