Viskariya Looking forward to spring, most planters already in January-February begin to look at the seeds of plants for a flower bed and a balcony. In such a pleasant and fascinating occupation, do not ignore the very pretty and unpretentious herbaceous plant of the clove family - viscaria. For many flower growers, this culture is well known as a soapberry, dawn, tar (tar) or gorichvet. In phytodesign viskarya is widely in demand due to its decorative, undemanding content and resistance to unfavorable climate conditions.

With minimal care, stunted (25-30 cm) forms of culture quickly grow into a chic, flowering carpet and look very organically in the design of curbs, rockeries, brochures, Moorish lawns and rock gardens. Tall (from 30 cm) varieties of viscaria experts recommend planting along fences, walls of economic and residential buildings, as well as around adult trees. Cute flowers with a diameter of about 2.5 cm, resembling cloves, delight the eye with a variety of colors - they can be pink, lilac, blue, white, purple. And with all this splendor, growing a viscry is pleasant and easy.

When to plant

Seedlings of viscaria are incredibly resistant to low temperatures, so seed sowing can be carried out at the end of April - early May, without fear of recurrent frosts. Many flower growers prefer to sow viscaria for the winter in order to accelerate flowering. Having gone through a natural stratification, autumn crops are already producing amicable shoots by the last week of April.

Site Preparation

In view of the light-seeking viskary, it is desirable to allocate an open solar platform for it. When planted in the shade, it will also be quite comfortable, but the bushes in this case will not grow so fluffy, and the bloom will not be so abundant. The soil culture likes to be drained, friable, with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction.

The plot can be prepared in autumn or treated in spring, a few days before sowing. When digging a plot, it is useful to fill the soil with organic fertilizers - compost, humus or overripe manure. Before the beginning of sowing works it is recommended to conduct active loosening and level the prepared plot with rakes.

Sowing in the ground

Seeds purchased in winter 20-30 minutes pickled in a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection and cleaned for stratification in the vegetable department of the household refrigerator. The material intended for podzimnego cultivation, requires only disinfection, treatment with cold it will take place in natural conditions. During the sowing campaign, the following procedure is recommended:

  • On the surface of the prepared area, holes of 0.4-0.5 mm depth are made and they are poured with warm water.
  • Sowing is carried out by nesting - 3-5 seeds per well. The scheme of planting of low-growing varieties is 15x15 cm, tall ones - 30x30 cm.
  • The wells are closed with dry earth or peat.

Depending on the variety, the seed germination process takes 10 to 15 days. Friendly shoots develop rapidly, and after 35-40 days the viscaria enters a massive flowering, which lasts 2-3 months.

    Growing conditions

The main care for planting viskarii does not take much time and reduces to carrying out the usual for flowering plants activities:

    • Flowering carpet regularly watered, especially responsive viskariya on the supply of moisture in a strong heat. In moderately warm weather, the procedure is carried out every 6-7 days, in drought - 2-3 times a week. However, the culture does not endure water logging: the root system begins to rot, and the flowers fade, wither and fall.
    • To ensure the flow of air to the roots, the soil under the planting is loosened, at the same time pulling the weed grass.
    • Very grateful to the visary reacts to the application of fertilizers. For the first time in a season it is recommended to feed the plant in the early stages of development. To do this, in 10 liters of irrigation water dilute urea, superphosphate and potassium sulfate (1 tablespoon). During the set of buds and mass flowering every 10-14 days viskariyu need to be fed with a full mineral fertilizer. Quality food has a great effect on the well-being of plants: bushes grow lush, spreading, and the flowers will be larger and brighter.

From time to time, you should bypass the planting and tear off the wilted flowers, freeing up space for new buds and giving the bushes a neat, well-groomed appearance.

      Diseases and pests

The undoubted advantage of the viscaria is its resistance to parasites and diseases. The insects do not favor her for the sticky fleecy stalk, which becomes a deadly trap for them. In extremely rare cases, the health of bushes can be threatened by leaf rollers, aphids, red spider mite. To get rid of them, plantings are sprinkled with soap or garlic water, the infusion of onion husk or tomato leaves is good.

Fungal infections are usually subjected to perennial forms of viscaria. Most often it is necessary to save bushes from rust, powdery mildew, root rot, bunt. In case of defeat, plantings are treated with fungicidal drugs - Ridomil, Horus, Topaz. Do not forget about preventive measures: the overgrown bushes should be regularly thinned and do not allow waterlogging the soil. In the event of a mass attack of periworms, perennials can be treated with industrial insecticides ("Fitoverm", "Aktara", "Aktellik"), but the use of chemicals before budding completely eliminates the blossoming of the viscaria in the current season.

      Popular varieties

About 400 species and varieties of viscaria are known in garden culture, the most popular of which are the following:

      • Viskariya "Holiday" - a mixed cultivar of culture, including several species of short-necked viscaria with colored flowers - peach, lilac, blue, bright pink, white. From the moment of sowing to the beginning of flowering, no more than 30 days pass. The variety is very good for decoration of balconies and borders, you can use it and as a sealant in a group planting.
      • Viscaria eyeball "Rumba" is a herbaceous annual, characterized by cold resistance and a long flowering period. Brightly colored non-marble flowers abundantly sprinkled with elegant openwork shrubs until the frosts. The petals are lilac, blue, purple, white and pink in color.

Excellent feels in pots and flowerpots, due to which it is widely in demand in the decorative gardening of balconies and open verandas.
      • Lichnis viscaria is a long-term form of culture growing to a height of 1 m. The technology of planting and care is not much different from growing other species. The bushes successfully hibernate without additional shelter. Timely removal of peduncles promotes repeated flowering.
